Implant Size and Profile Aren’t the Same Thing
Implant size refers to volume. Profile describes how far the implant projects forward from the chest.
Two implants can have similar volume but distribute that volume differently. A lower-profile implant tends to have a wider base with less forward projection. A higher-profile implant places more of its volume outward from the chest. American Surgical Arts currently works with round implant profiles ranging from low through ultra-high.
That means a larger implant isn’t automatically a higher-profile implant, and choosing more volume doesn’t tell the whole story about how your breasts may look afterward.
Your Measurements Narrow Down the Choices
Your chest and breast dimensions matter because an implant needs to fit your natural anatomy. During a consultation, our surgeons take measurements and compare them with the type of fullness and projection you prefer. Some patients like more fullness in the upper breast, while others prefer a wider base and gentler projection.
This is also why choosing an implant based on someone else’s results can be misleading. The same implant can look different on two people because their chest width, natural tissue, skin, and starting breast position aren’t identical.
If your main concern is sagging rather than volume alone, adding a larger implant may not accomplish what you’re hoping for. Imaging and Sizers Add More Information
American Surgical Arts uses VECTRA® 3D imaging to create simulations of different breast implant sizes. These images aren’t promises of an exact postoperative appearance, but they give you and your surgeon another way to discuss proportions that can be difficult to describe in words.
Our surgeons also use silicone implant sizers during surgery to compare different sizes and projections within the breast pocket before choosing the implant. Preferences can change over time as well. Breast augmentation revision may include switching to a different implant size or changing the amount of upper-breast fullness.
