6 Tips for Recovering From a Mommy Makeover

Nurse adjusting IV line for a woman resting in a hospital bed after mommy makeover surgery Recovery from a mommy makeover is a process, and it’s one that deserves your full attention. Dr. Sean Bidic and Dr. Vinay Gundlapalli, our board-certified surgeons at American Surgical Arts in Mullica Hill, New Jersey, will give you clear guidance after surgery.

Your recovery timeline and expectations will depend on which procedures you’re having done, which could include a tummy tuckliposuction, or breast lift or augmentation. Still, there are a few universal tips that can make a difference in how you heal physically and mentally.

1. Plan to Be Off Your Feet

Recovery isn’t the time to power through your to-do list. Your body needs real rest. That means putting your feet up, avoiding lifting (including children), and letting others help.

Arrange for childcare, meal prep, and household support before surgery so you’re not scrambling when rest should be your top priority.

2. Keep Moving (Just a Little)

Light walking around the house helps reduce the risk of blood clots and keeps your circulation going.

But do not push it. No workouts, no chores that involve bending or reaching, and no lifting anything heavier than a half-gallon of milk until your surgeon gives you the all-clear.

3. Stay on Top of Pain and Swelling

Take your medications as prescribed, even if you’re feeling okay. Waiting too long between doses can make it harder to manage discomfort.

Compression garments may feel snug, but they help reduce swelling and support your healing tissues. Follow your surgeon’s instructions on how long to wear them.

4. Sleep in the Right Position

Depending on the procedures you’ve had, you may need to sleep on your back or in a slightly elevated position. A wedge pillow or a recliner can make this easier. Sleeping well helps your body recover faster, so get comfortable early.

5. Don’t Rush the Results

Swelling, bruising, and asymmetry are all part of healing. It takes time (sometimes several months) for the final results to take shape. Be patient with your body.

If anything feels off or you’re unsure about what’s normal, call your surgeon’s office.

6. Trust the Process — and Your Providers

Healing takes time, and it rarely follows a straight line. One of the most helpful things you can do during recovery is to be patient and rely on your medical team. Dr. Bidic and Dr. Gundlapalli are here to answer your questions, guide you through the ups and downs, and make sure you never feel like you’re doing this alone.
